Benevolence: a desire to do good to others; goodwill; charitableness; to be filled with benevolence toward one's fellow creatures.
Benevolence is at the heart of the Carmen.
Historically the Company's benevolence was for 'the relief of necessitous Carmen', but today it reaches out more widely to individuals in need, as well as worthwhile causes, in education, medical research, the hospice movement and wherever else it can offer worthwhile support.
Today, the Company's charitable vehicle is the Carmen's Benevolent Trust.
The money for Carmen's charity comes virtually exclusively from members of the Company, through regular personal donations and generous fund raising.
Administered by seven Trustees, all of whom are Carmen, the Trust receives around 250 appeals every year. It gives to as many as it can, ever mindful 'to give a little where a little means a lot'.
In the 10 years to April 2010 the Trust made grants totalling nearly £700k to more than 600 recipients.
