Date(s) - Friday, March 15, 2024 & Sunday, March 17, 2024
Unfortunately this event has had to be cancelled due to lack of interest.
Staying at the Walpole Bay hotel in Margate, we will visit the Dover Transport museum, Dover Castle and the newly refurbished Hornby museum, Wonderworks. A number of Carmen exclusives have been arranged to ensure a roaring 1920s weekend is guaranteed!
On Saturday, transport will be provided to journey down to the Dover Transport museum. The museum is home to many forms of vintage transport and also features vintage shop fronts displaying the kind of items many Carmen will find familiar from their childhoods. The museum will be open exclusively to Carmen, allowing plenty of time to reminisce & enjoy the exhibits. The museum’s Chairman has kindly agreed to give a talk on how Dover was a magnet for all things’ aviation in the early 1900s.
As always with Car Club events, we allow time for conviviality and fellowship. Our weekend rate at the quirky Walpole Bay Hotel includes a hot and cold buffet on Friday night, breakfasts and a 1920s black tie Gala dinner night on Saturday. Bring a Carmen 1920s glitz and glamour to the Walpole!
Rising above the famous White Cliffs high above the Channel, Dover Castle is an icon of England. Built soon after 1066, this mighty fortress has been the site of royal intrigue and epic sieges and was at the centre of the crucial effort to evacuate hundreds of thousands of Allied troops from the beach of Dunkirk. We’ll lunch in the NAAFI Restaurant, housed in the 1868 Regimental Institute, where there are great views down to the wartime tunnels, the port of Dover and across the Channel. After lunch, there’ll be time to explore the castle at your own leisure before our transport back to the hotel.
After a leisurely Sunday morning start, we’ll head to the newly refurbished Wonderworks, just outside Margate. An immersive experience inspired by the UK’s best known hobby brands – Hornby, Scalextric, Airfix, Corgi and Pocher. Whether you’re a speed freak, engine geek, model train enthusiast, or James Bond car fanatic, there’s something for everyone! One of the design team will join us for a unique 30-minute show and tell session. After exploring the museum, we’ll head back to the hotel for lunch and a talk by the owner Jane Bishop on the hotel’s living museum and the Napery.
