This event has now closed.  Please contact the Deputy Clerk if you would like to ask if there are any spaces available at the lunch.  The Lord Mayor’s Show has been a focal point of life in London for over 800 years and is a riot of colour, costume, spectacle and traditional pageantry

The office of Lord Mayor is a symbol of the independence granted to the medieval city by the monarch.  In 1215, London was the biggest city north of the Alps. The city’s influence was growing rapidly yet the town’s aldermen were engaged in a long running battle to secure commune status.  King John, facing a crisis at home and abroad, decided to curry favour with the aldermen of the city by issuing a Royal Charter allowing London to choose its own Mayor. The city gratefully accepted and the position of Lord Mayor was born.  However the Royal Charter stipulated that each Mayor would be required to visit Westminster, the centre of royal power, to swear allegiance to the Crown. Thus began the tradition which we now know as the Lord Mayor’s Show.  In rain, snow, hail and sleet, in times of war as well as peace, through the plague-ridden city and through the fire ravished city, the Lord Mayor has seldom failed to meet his pledge.

The modern-day show is a direct descendent of those early processions. The Lord Mayor uses a coach which is over 250 years of age, the costumes have been worn in the procession for hundreds of years and the ancient guilds and livery companies play the same role in the procession today that they did in the medieval period.

This year, the Master, Consort, Junior Warden and Hall Keeper will join the Senior Livery Companies Float.

After the procession, Carmen and their guests can enjoy a lunch at Stationers’ Hall.  The Hall will be open from 10.15am to 11.00am for coffee, tea and biscuits.  It will then reopen at 12.30pm for a two course hot buffet, served with a glass of wine.  A pay bar will be in operation after the initial inclusive drink.  A close-up magician will perform throughout the lunch and will entertain children (and adults) with a show at around 1.30pm.  A raffle to raise money for the Stationers’ Charities will also be in operation and will be called at the end of the lunch.

The cost is £50 per adult and £25 for children under 14.  Under 3s are free.  Payment is required to confirm your place(s).  Direct Debits will be taken on Monday 7 November 2022.

The closing date for booking is Friday 4 November 2022.  The dress code is informal.
