The Company has two registered charities. These are the Worshipful Company of Carmen Benevolent Trust CIO (Registered No. 1164687) and the Worshipful Company of Carmen St Dunstan Heritage Trust (Registered No. 1174950). These are generally referred to within the Livery as the ‘Ben Trust’ and the ‘Heritage Trust’. Together, these trusts enable the Company to help others through education and charitable giving.
The Ben Trust was established in its present form in 2015 and is the sole means by which the Company exercises benevolence and philanthropy, which are essential attributes of all Livery companies. The Trust focuses on supporting a wide range of educational and training needs as well as the transport and logistics industries, City charities and the relief of hardship among Carmen and their dependants. There is more about the Ben Trust here.
The Heritage Trust was set up in 2017 to lease and renovate a 200-year old building in Fleet Street for it to become the physical focus of the Livery. The building has been completely refitted and now provides offices for the Livery as well as rooms for small gatherings and functions (including educating the public about the profession of carman) and a museum. Generous and continuing financial support for these charities is an important part of being a Carman as, without it, the Livery cannot exercise that benevolence which is so much the duty of a Liveryman; or maintain and develop its premises.
