The Lord Mayor’s Show is the oldest, longest, best loved and least-rehearsed civic procession in the world. The 2024 Show will set off from Mansion House on 9 November at 11am. The 696th Lord Mayor of London will be Alderman Alastair King of the Queenhithe Ward.
The Show dates back to the early 13th century, when a desperate King John granted that the City of London could appoint its own Mayor. He insisted that each newly-elected Mayor must come upriver to distant Westminster and swear loyalty to the Crown. The Mayors, and later the Lord Mayors of London have been making that journey for over 800 years. Around them grew up the noisy, colourful, joyous procession that over the centuries became known as the Lord Mayor’s Show. The modern-day show is a direct descendent of those early processions. The Lord Mayor uses a coach which is over 250 years of age, the costumes have been worn in the procession for hundreds of years and the ancient guilds and livery companies play the same role in the procession today that they did in the medieval period.
As last year, the Master will join the Senior Livery Companies Float.
After the procession, Carmen and their guests can enjoy a lunch at Stationers’ Hall. The Hall will be open from 10.15am to 11.00am for coffee, tea and biscuits. It will then reopen at 12.30pm for a two course hot buffet, served with a glass of wine. A pay bar will be in operation after the initial inclusive drink. A close-up magician will perform throughout the lunch and will entertain children (and adults) with a show at around 1.30pm. A raffle to raise money for the Stationers’ Charities will also be in operation and will be called at the end of the lunch.
The cost is £50 for adults and £30 for children under 14. Under 3’s are free. Payment is required to confirm your place(s). Direct Debits will be taken around Friday 1 November 2024.
The closing date for booking is Friday 1 November 2024. The dress code is informal.
