With so much activity in the worlds of both politics and road passenger transport, Court Assistant Paul Sainthouse is delighted to advise that The Worshipful Company of Carmen has confirmed its first talk event of 2025 and have again secured some excellent speakers – both recently having joined the Carmen.
Helen Hardy – Director of Partnerships & Marketing, The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport UK
Helen is Director of Partnerships and Marketing for CILT (UK), who are the chartered body for professionals involved in the movement of goods and people and their associated supply chain networks. Helen previously worked as Director of Membership and Engagement (CILT UK), senior business development manager for Wincanton plc, and head of Membership at the RHA.
Helen says: “My philosophy in life is that you can sell your time for any price, but you can never buy it back so make your time count. I am a law graduate, a part qualified counsellor (fascinated with all things mind related) and the love of my life is my springer spaniel followed by my 2 grown up children and my husband. Oh, and I like coffee and cake!”
Inspector Rik Wenham – Officer in charge of the Metropolitan Police, Commercial Vehicle Unit
Rik is the officer in charge of the Metropolitan Police, Commercial Vehicle Unit. He took his role in 2019 and discovered that the unit was simply not fit for purpose – and re-booted it. The first thing he did was to drop the word enforcement from the unit’s title and all correspondence. He looked at the way commercial vehicle policing was regarded within the industry and was frankly was horrified at the “them and us” perception, often backed up with incidents that made be shake my head in shame, so he went large and went bold, brought in a community based policing model to a niche area of roads policing, and set about building trust and confidence with a strong engagement led model, enforcement absolutely has a place, but it’s not the silver bullet….
Rik says: “I am absolutely committed to the commercial vehicle industry and very much see that partnership is the only way forward, despite the best efforts to the contrary of some of my colleagues across the UK, I am passionate about supporting and showcasing our drivers, and when it goes wrong, they are treated as victims, not suspects for the 99% majority of cases (unless drink/drug tests are failed and then its hard not to) but always offer support….”
All Carmen talks deliver enormous value for the sector, but Paul is sure you will agree this is really one you must try and attend. Whilst this event is free to attend, please confirm to the Deputy Clerk by email that you will be joining for catering requirements.
Places are limited to 30 so book yourselves in early to avoid disappointment.
Paul looks forward to seeing you and your guests for what promises to be another very informative and inspiring meeting.
